Just over a year ago, I discovered 10Below Ice Cream. My sisters and I went out on a Saturday night adventure to various ice cream locations and this was our first stop. We had plans to visit three other shops that night, so we decided to only get one ice cream to share. Our flavor of choice, Monkey Business, which contains Nutella and bananas. Monkey Business is the most heavenly ice creation I have ever had. That night, 10Below Ice Cream became my favorite shop of all time.
Back in May, I was able to take another trip to NYC and 10Below Ice Cream was at the top of my list. I wanted to make sure I remembered how good it was correctly, and it definitely lived up to my memory. So when I scheduled my most recent trip to NYC, I knew I wanted to give 10Below their own Ice Cream Sunday feature. I reached out and scheduled a time to come by when one of the owners was around, so I could get a little more back story on this rolled ice cream sensation.
10Below Ice Cream is owned by two brothers and a best friend. The concept started over a few beers and quickly became a true family business. They put their own blood, sweat, and tears into building their first location in Chinatown. And the owners of the shop take their business very seriously. The ice cream consists only of milk, cream, and sugar, and has no stabilizers or preservatives. All ingredients are bought locally and everything is made fresh daily.
After learning more about their business, I was put to the test. I stepped behind the counter and made my own order, Monkey Business. And let me tell you, it was hard. It takes consistent work to mix up and move around the ice cream to make sure it doesn’t stick to the plate. But that was the easy part. Making a perfect roll is impossible on the first try and my efforts were no exceptions. It looks like I may need to stick to just writing about ice cream!
You can visit 10Below Ice Cream at one of its four NYC locations, or in Philadelphia. Plus, opening in January, they will have their first west coast location in Los Angeles. Since California is on my 2018 bucket list, I hope to make it to their location again soon! But for now I will just have to drool over my pictures and dream of their ice cream.
