Hey! If you don’t know me, I’m Elizabeth. If you do know me… Sup? Thanks so much for stopping by and reading my “coming out” story… ummm wait no, not that kind of coming out. I’m just introducing my side project I’ve been working on for the last year and a half. Wow… I can’t believe it’s been that long since I dreamed up this project and it’s already come so far. But I’m getting ahead of myself, so let’s get back to the beginning of Ice Cream for Dinner.
Two and a half years ago I scored my first big kid job as a Social Media Coordinator for a local clothing company. If I’m being honest, I had no idea what I was doing and I was in “fake it till you make it” mode for the first year. Just kidding, it was actually the whole time! Anyway, the job started out slow enough for me because their social media was newer and no one before me had set the bar very high, but it quickly started to take off and the expectations grew. And to top it off the company hired their first marketing director six months after I started, which really made me aspire to do better and learn more.
After the marketing director was hired, I got the chance to be a little more involved in photoshoots. That was one part of my job I truly enjoyed, but I always felt like I was lacking a creative eye. My boss gave me the opportunity to create flat lays of our Instagram account and I was terrible at it. I constantly looked for inspiration and still felt like my flat lays came out terrible. I was determined to get better at them.
Another big part of my job was working with bloggers and influencers. I was always looking for new accounts that could represent our brand and I thoroughly enjoyed looking through their Instagram accounts and blogs. I dreamed up many ideas of what I could do to start my own Instagram account, but I never wanted to have an account full of pictures of me.
And finally the last ingredient on how this all came together… I always pondered writing a blog about some of my past experiences. I wanted to write about my 20s and everything I’ve been through. But I wanted it to be a secret. I wanted to be one of those mysterious bloggers who shares amazing stories and everyone always wonders who she is…
So with all these pieces added together, I eventually came up with the idea of creating Ice Cream for Dinner. A secret Instagram account and blog where I practiced my flat lays and humor without anyone I know seeing it and secretly judging me (because I was/am pretty convinced that would happen). I heard having a niche was really important in a successful Instagram account, so I picked humorous flat lays based on my obsession with graphic tees and my complete lack of desire to be in front of the camera. And my blog you ask… I think I wrote two posts but suffered from severe writer’s block any time I tried to write a story.
Everything with my Instagram account was going really well and staying a secret until Facebook got involved. One day my coworker randomly said Ice Cream for Dinner? And I was like, what yeah, I want ice cream. But really she was telling me that Facebook got involved and suggested she followed me even though I never linked my Instagram account to my Facebook. After that several people I knew started following me and I knew my secret had come to an end. From that point I still didn’t discuss it much, except with a couple people. I continued on keeping it to myself until I was interviewing for my current job. In a momentary brain lapse, I suddenly found myself talking about my account with my interviewers and they seemed really interested. When I got the job, my boss even mentioned my account in an email to everyone in the company so that was the point where I just decided to roll with it.
In the last month or so of thinking about what I’m going to do moving forward, I decided to get back to my original idea of actually working on my blog. (That’s why you’re reading this) I’m also planning to expand my Instagram account to humor in other forms like mugs and wall hangings and you may even see a few pictures of me. Feel free to tag along and follow my Instagram account @icecreamfordinner to see what I’m up to. And I’ll be sure to let you know when I do get around to posting on my blog again.
Oh, and in case you were wondering where the name Ice Cream For Dinner came from… honestly I don’t remember exactly how it came to me, but it basically just describes my life in a nutshell. Plus, it’s catchy and people seem to enjoy it!
P.S. This is one of my favorites! A graphic tee created just for me and I’m obsessed.
