Do you have any restaurants or ice cream shops that create some serious nostalgia for you? I do, and it’s Leatherby’s Family Creamery. When I was three to eight years old my family lived in Bountiful, Utah. We frequented Leatherby’s as a family outing and I think their ice cream may be to blame for my addiction.
As I made a list of the places to visit and blog about in Utah, my first thought was Baked Bear, and my second thought was Leatherby’s. Now since I was a kid, most of the Leatherby’s locations have closed. They only have two locations left in the state, but I realized the Taylorsville location was actually pretty convenient to where I work. The other location is in Draper, so I feel I might become a more frequent vistor.
Alright, let’s talk a bit about the menu. Leatherby’s is a restaurant with a decent looking selection of sandwiches, burgers, finger foods, and soups. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up trying any of their food so I can’t vouch for that, but I’m hoping to go back soon and try a burger.
The ice cream menu is fairly large and it was a pretty difficult decision on what to try. I read through every option and weighed my decision very carefully based on the size of the item, the flavors of ice cream, the toppings, and the price. Finally, I settled on “Celeste’s Cookie Concoction.” This cookie sundae consisted of cookies and cream and peanut butter cookie dough ice cream, a homemade chocolate chip cookie, crushed oreos, and was topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
To say I’m drooling right now thinking about that peanut butter cookie dough ice cream would be an understatement. It’s probably a good thing Leatherby’s isn’t open on Sunday’s, otherwise I’d be there devouring another one of these sundaes. It was that good. My friend had the “Christopher’s Mud Pie,” which was also completely amazing. I doubt there is an item on their dessert menu that I wouldn’t love.
As I enjoyed my cookie sundae, I couldn’t help but picture my family sitting at a table nearby and enjoying our ice cream. Leatherby’s reminded me of simpler days where I was just a kid without a care in the world. It probably helped that the shop doesn’t look like it’s been updated in the last 20 years, but that’s beside the point. My trip was amazing, and I can say with 100% certainty that I be back to try more menu items.
