Shirokuma – Utah’s First Snow Cream Shop

Shirokuma – Utah’s First Snow Cream Shop

Set in your average suburban Utah strip mall, is the very unique Shirokuma. Catching up to the already booming trends in NYC and LA, Shirokuma brought the Taiwanese dessert to West Valley, Utah. So what is this delicious dessert? It’s snow cream.

In Taiwan, the dessert is actually known as shaved ice. However, since we already have a different version in the US, Shirokuma coined the name snow cream. And it’s rightfully named because it has the light, fluffy feel of snow, mixed with that delicious creamy feel of ice cream.

But that’s not all this shop is known for, they also have Bubble Waffles. This treat is a Hong Kong street food, and it’s the perfect combination with the snow cream. Mix both of these together with some awesome toppings, and you’re in dessert heaven.

When you walk into Shirokuma, you’ll notice a lot of different flavors and variety. Of course they serve traditional chocolate and vanilla, as well as strawberry and banana, but they truly encourage their customers to branch out a little more and try some flavors and toppings inspired by the various Asian countries.

With snow cream flavors like Matcha (Green Tea) and Taro, and exotic toppings like lychee, sweetened red bean and mochi, there’s always something new to try at Shirokuma. And if you’re feeling a little hesitant with what to get, just ask their super helpful owners and employees. They know the product, what goes great together, and are happy to find out what dessert is going to be your favorite. Plus, they have a flavor of the month every month, so it’s a good excuse to keep coming back.

Also, here’s a quick fun fact. The name Shirokuma is Japanese and translates into “white bear” (aka a polar bear). Did you know that after polar bears have a good meal, they have pink all over them? So if you ever see the Shirokuma bear with a little pink, that’s why. Though they might tell you it’s because he ate too many strawberries! If you’re looking to try this unique dessert, you can visit them at 2843 S 5600 W STE 120, West Valley City, UT 84120. And be sure to let me know what flavors and topping you try!
